The Association des marins de la vall\u00e9e du Saint-Laurent spearheaded this major cultural initiative, with the following objectives in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To disseminate the rich maritime heritage of Quebec;<\/li>\n<li>To promote navigation professions, including seamanship;<\/li>\n<li>To highlight Quebeckers\u2019 strong connection to the St. Lawrence River.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n        <div class=\"acf-block__column acf-block__picture\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mmq.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/musee-maritime-du-quebec-facade.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 50&nbsp;years later, the Museum now proudly ranks among the most important museums in America. Here are the milestones that marked the Museum\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Milestones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1920&nbsp;:<\/strong> Foundation of the Association des marins de L\u2019Islet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1965&nbsp;:<\/strong> Foundation of the Association des marins de la C\u00f4te-du-Sud<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1968&nbsp;:<\/strong> Foundation of the Mus\u00e9e maritime de la C\u00f4te-du-Sud<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1969-70&nbsp;:<\/strong> The Minist\u00e8re des Affaires culturelles du Qu\u00e9bec entrusts the Museum with its provincial maritime collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1973&nbsp;: <\/strong>Relocation of the Bernier monument to the Museum\u2019s premises \u2013 It was first erected near the L\u2019Islet-sur-Mer parish hall, in June&nbsp;1962.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1974&nbsp;:<\/strong> The Mus\u00e9e maritime de la C\u00f4te-du-Sud is officially dedicated to the memory of Captain Joseph-Elz\u00e9ar Bernier and its name is changed to Mus\u00e9e maritime Bernier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1975&nbsp;:<\/strong>The Museum is accredited a private museum by the Minist\u00e8re des Affaires culturelles du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1976<\/strong>&nbsp;: The Museum acquires the giant scale model of the <em>Arctic <\/em>vessel from Lucien Leclerc, a model maker in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1979&nbsp;:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Thanks to the generosity of&nbsp;Groupe CSL Lt\u00e9e, the Museum acquires the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmq.qc.ca\/en\/expositions\/the-j-e-bernier-ii-sailing-ship\/\">J.E.&nbsp;Bernier&nbsp;II<\/a><\/em>. This sailing ship travelled around North America, from Montr\u00e9al to the Arctic, through the Northwest Passage and the Panama Canal.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The Museum becomes the repository of the maritime heritage collection of the Mus\u00e9e du Qu\u00e9bec, now called the Mus\u00e9e national des beaux-arts du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1980&nbsp;:<\/strong> Through the Crown Assets Distribution Centre and the National Museums of Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard entrusts the Museum with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmq.qc.ca\/en\/expositions\/the-ernest-lapointe-icebreaker\/\"><em>Ernest Lapointe<\/em> icebreaker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1981-82&nbsp;:<\/strong> Complete refurbishment of the Museum to meet museum standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1983&nbsp;:<\/strong> Acquisition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmq.qc.ca\/en\/expositions\/the-bras-dor-hydrofoil\/\"><em>Bras d\u2019Or<\/em> hydrofoil<\/a> by the Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1985&nbsp;:<\/strong> Creation of the Fondation du Mus\u00e9e maritime Bernier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1990-92&nbsp;:<\/strong> Major restoration work on the <em>Ernest Lapointe<\/em> icebreaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1994&nbsp;: <\/strong>Creation of the marine interpretation park and opening to the public of the<em> Bras&nbsp;d\u2019Or<\/em> hydrofoil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1996-97&nbsp;:<\/strong> With the addition of the Boathouse (interpretation, exhibition and traditional watercraft construction hall), the Museum offers premises similar to major maritime museums in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1998&nbsp;:<\/strong> The Mus\u00e9e maritime Bernier changes names to Mus\u00e9e maritime du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2008&nbsp;:<\/strong> 40th&nbsp;anniversary of the Mus\u00e9e maritime du Qu\u00e9bec and participation in the 400th&nbsp;anniversary of Qu\u00e9bec City with the <em>Ocean Blue, Ivory White <\/em>exhibition at Bassin Brown<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2009&nbsp;:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Museum highlights the 100th&nbsp;anniversary of Canada\u2019s laying claim to the whole Arctic Archipelago by Captain Joseph-Elz\u00e9ar Bernier and his crew.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The same year marked the beginning of renovations in the former convent to house attractions featuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmq.qc.ca\/en\/expositions\/capitaine-j-e-bernier\/\">Joseph-Elz\u00e9ar Bernier exhibition<\/a> and in the adjacent former National Bank building. The new entrance hall and lobby of the museum was also built.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2010&nbsp;<\/strong>: Inauguration of the newly renovated museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2013&nbsp;:<\/strong> Inauguration of the new <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmq.qc.ca\/en\/expositions\/sea-roots\/\">Sea Roots<\/a> <\/em>permanent exhibition<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2014&nbsp;:<\/strong> The Museum discloses the results from a chemical analysis of the contents of bottles found in the <em>Empress of Ireland<\/em> shipwreck. Those bottles are part of the Museum\u2019s collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015&nbsp;:<\/strong> The Museum participates in the \u201cAcquisition de connaissances sur les \u00e9paves du Saint-Laurent\u201d project in partnership with the Centre interdisciplinaire de d\u00e9veloppement en cartographie des oc\u00e9ans (CIDCO \u2013 interdisciplinary centre for the development of ocean mapping), the Cimeti\u00e8re du Saint-Laurent and the St.&nbsp;Lawrence Global Observatory (SLGO) to build knowledge on St.&nbsp;Lawrence shipwrecks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016&nbsp;:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Under the terms of the <em>Cultural Heritage Act<\/em>, the Minist\u00e8re de la Culture et des Communications of Qu\u00e9bec designates Captain Joseph-Elz\u00e9ar Bernier a historical figure.<\/li><li>The Museum joins the Franklin Network Outreach Project comprised of ten Canadian museums.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017&nbsp;:<\/strong> The Institut de recherche en histoire maritime et arch\u00e9ologie subaquatique (IRHMAS \u2013 maritime history and underwater archeology research institute) partners with the Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2018&nbsp;:<\/strong> The Museum celebrates the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of its foundation. A new permanent exhibition is inaugurated in the Boathouse: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmq.qc.ca\/en\/expositions\/the-era-of-traditional-small-craft\/\">The Era of Traditional Small Craft<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2019<\/strong>&nbsp;: The Museum is recognized a certified museum institution by the Minist\u00e8re de la Culture et des Communications of Qu\u00e9bec. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020<\/strong>&nbsp;:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Museum entrusts the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrimoine-culturel.gouv.qc.ca\/rpcq\/detailInventaire.do?methode=consulter&amp;id=1793&amp;type=inv#.X2UCSJNKhjQ\">R\u00e9pertoire du patrimoine culturel du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a> with an inventory of 400&nbsp;digitized and documented objects.<\/li><li>Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Museum closes its doors to the public on March&nbsp;14, at 4&nbsp;p.m., following a decree declaring a state of health emergency by the Government of Qu\u00e9bec. The Museum reopens June&nbsp;20 after being closed for several months, but it closes its doors again to the public on October&nbsp;10, 2020.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2021<\/strong>&nbsp;:&nbsp;Creation of an audio library of 120&nbsp;sounds from maritime heritage.
