People of the country, people of the River

«Of course there is the countryside. But the essence is not about describing the majesty and grandeur of the river, it is about depicting the men
Pierre Perreault, Producer

If the history of Québec were to be told, the St. Lawrence River would be central to the tale. The river was the first great partner of the earliest explorers and our ancestors; a means of communication, of survival; an instrumental part of the environment.

The maritime aspects of Québec’s background have become a forgotten page in history books and in the classroom. Yet, there is much to say and learn. Do you know all about the river? Are you aware that it has been changed, domesticated and tamed for use? Did you know that it bore witness to, and sometimes instigated, an extraordinary wealth of enriching human experiences and some dramatic and painful moments? Do you truly believe that U-boats prowled the St. Lawrence and pretty demoiselles from Matane danced with the Germans in the evening?

People of the country, people of the River is about tales of man and the sea, tales that will enthral and surprise you, make you laugh and even shed a tear. Come meet the men and women who travelled, and still travel, the river and open seas and view an exhibit of over one hundred objects conjuring up memories of Québec's maritime history, witnessing the St. Lawrence’s continuous forging of the identity of People of the country, people of the river.

Follow the road along the St. Lawrence River to L’Islet-sur-Mer (a one-hour drive from Québec City) so that you too may surrender to the charms of the mighty St. Lawrence.
